AI Use in Submissions

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Ilmiah Kebidanan (The Journal of Midwifery) recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in academic writing, research, and scholarly publishing. The journal permits the responsible use of AI-assisted technologies under the conditions outlined in this policy.

Permitted Use of AI Tools

Authors may use AI-assisted tools, including language-editing and generative AI technologies, for purposes such as:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, and language clarity.
  • Editing or proofreading manuscript text.
  • Assisting with formatting or translation.
  • Supporting other manuscript preparation activities, provided that the resulting content is carefully reviewed and verified by the authors.

The use of AI tools must not replace the authors' responsibility for the originality, accuracy, validity, and integrity of their research.

Prohibited Use of AI Tools

AI tools must not be used to:

  • Generate substantive scientific content without appropriate human review, verification, and accountability.
  • Fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data or findings.
  • Produce misleading or scientifically unsupported interpretations.
  • Generate or include fabricated references, citations, or Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
  • Misrepresent AI-generated material as independently verified research evidence.
  • Be listed as an author or co-author of a manuscript.

Authorship is limited to individuals who meet the journal's authorship criteria and can take responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the published work. AI tools cannot fulfill these responsibilities and must not be credited as authors.

Author Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted to the journal, including any text, analysis, figures, or other materials generated or assisted by AI tools.

Authors must ensure that their manuscripts contain accurate information, appropriate citations, original scholarly contributions, and valid research findings.

All references, citations, and DOIs must be verified against their original sources. Authors must not rely solely on AI-generated bibliographic information.

Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of AI tools when such tools have contributed substantively to the preparation of the manuscript, including the generation or modification of scientific text, research analysis, figures, or other scholarly content.

The disclosure should identify the AI tool used, describe its purpose, and indicate the extent of its contribution. This information may be provided in an appropriate section of the manuscript, such as the Methods, Acknowledgements, or a dedicated AI Use Disclosure statement, depending on the nature of the AI assistance.

Routine spelling, grammar, or language corrections that do not substantively alter the scientific content generally do not require a separate AI disclosure.

Disclosure of AI use does not diminish the authors' responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.

Use of AI by Editors

Editors of Jurnal Ilmiah Kebidanan (The Journal of Midwifery) may use AI tools for limited administrative purposes, such as improving routine correspondence or assisting with language clarity.

Editors remain fully responsible for editorial decisions, including decisions concerning peer review, revisions, acceptance, and rejection.

Editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and related editorial communications. Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, authors' personal information, and other confidential materials must not be uploaded to publicly accessible AI tools or AI services that do not provide adequate confidentiality and data protection.

AI tools must not replace independent editorial judgment, scientific assessment, or responsibility for publication ethics.

Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers may use AI tools for limited language-related assistance when preparing review reports, provided that manuscript confidentiality and data protection are maintained.

Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, figures, tables, supplementary materials, or confidential information to publicly accessible AI tools or AI services that do not provide adequate confidentiality and data protection.

AI tools must not replace the reviewer's independent critical assessment of a manuscript's originality, methodology, validity, interpretation, and scientific contribution.

Reviewers remain fully responsible for the accuracy, objectivity, confidentiality, and integrity of their review reports.

Reviewers must disclose any substantive use of AI in preparing their review reports to the handling editor.

Reviewers must not delegate the peer-review process or the evaluation of a manuscript entirely to AI tools.
