Komunikasi Interpersonal dan Upaya Preventif Kesehatan Gigi Untuk Menurunkan Angka Oral Index Symplified (OHI-S) dan Kejadian Gingivitis pada Siswa SMP Kertha Budaya Mas-Gianyar

Abstract

Adolescents are one of the vulnerable groups to gingivitis, which is caused in part by hormonal changes. Gingivitis that often occurs in adolescents in puberty gingivitis, typically characterized by swelling of gums along with poor dental and oral hygiene. Prevention of gingivitis can be achieved by maintaining dental and oral hygiene.

The aim of this study is to determine the oral hygiene, measured by the OHI-S Index, and the incidence of gingivitis before and after implementing interpersonal communication effort (chairside talk) and preventive efforts for dental and oral health.

This study is an action research conducted from June to October 2023, located at SMP Kertha Budaya Mas. The sample size used in this study are 56 peoples, comprising all eight-grade students. The data obtained is analyzed univariately to obtain avarages.

The results of this study shows a decrease in the averages of Oral Hygiene Index Simplified score, which was 2.82 (moderate criteria) before the intervention, to 0.82 (good criteria) after the intervention. Gingivitis occurred in 42 peoples (75%) before the intervention, and after the intervention, only 7 peoples (15,2%) out of 46 students at SMP Kertha Budaya Mas-Gianyar experienced gingivitis.

The conclusion of this study is decrease in the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified score and the number of individuals suffering from gingivitis among adolescents at SMP Kertha Budaya Mas-Gianyar following the implementation of interpersonal communication (chairside talk) and preventive measures such as dental calculus removal and tooth brushing excercises.
